Lyrics: Original lyrics by John Denver ~Leaving on a Jet Plane~
IMPROV # 6: No words for this one, just the theme of a character leaving
town. Any character, any time- just as long as one of them leaves.
Packed
~~~
All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin', It's early morn,
The taxi's waitin', he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die
Michael Guerin took a deep breath and closed his eyes. His heart was pounding so
hard he wondered if it was visible underneath his T-shirt. He stood on the
sidewalk outside of the house of the only woman who he could ever love and he
was leaving. He was leaving her and he was leaving Roswell.
The night before had been so hard. So emotionally draining. Emotions he never
knew he was capable of owning had been unleashed. Telling Maria DeLuca he was
leaving town for awhile was exhausting. Not realizing how much he truly meant to
her until he had to say good-bye. Seeing the tears spill from her expressive
eyes. Hearing the quiver in her voice as she begged him not to go.
"I have to," he tried to convince her while he held her hand.
"I have to."
"Will you come back?"
He nodded while praying that he would. Praying that he would be able to. "I
have to do this Maria; if there's a chance of me learning about myself there,
then I have to go."
Maria tried to accept the fact that Michael was leaving, he felt her nod against
his neck. "Promise that you'll come back to me someday Michael."
"Will you wait for me?"
~~~
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leaving' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
~~~
He held her all night as they made promises to each other. Promises of returning
and promises of waiting. On a hunch, Michael Guerin was leaving town. Leaving to
find out the truth about who he was and what he was. Accepting the facts of
being neither of this world or the other. It was his voyage to make alone, his
own trip of self-discovery.
Now standing outside of her house, as the sun was barely a sliver over the
horizon, he was saying good-bye. Not having enough left in him to see her again
he wouldn't go to the door. Not wanting to feel her body shake with sadness,
he'd leave before he could say good-bye again. He'd leave before he changed his
mind.
He looked down at the packed bag at his feet. He kicked it and squeezed his eyes
shut fighting back the moisture. Tears were for girls; he tried to tell himself
but he felt like sitting down and sobbing for the woman he was leaving behind.
~~~
There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now they don't mean a thing
Every place I go I'll think of you
Every song I sing I'll sing for you
When I come back I'll bring your wedding ring
~~~
The memories that were riding so close to the surface of all the times she'd
been there for him and the lack of times he'd made himself emotionally available
for her. All the heartache and suffering he had put her through only to fall
deeper in love with her. And now, he was leaving her. He was leaving her with
the promise to come back. He knew when he did come back; he'd never leave her
side again. Deep in his heart he knew he'd come back for good and she would
welcome him with open arms.
Someday soon he'd be back again. His mind would be cleared of any misgivings of
his own dimension. He'd be able to give himself wholly over to her and be able
to accept himself as she had already accepted him. Someday soon, he promised
himself thinking about the days and nights ahead of missing her and wanting her.
Needing to hear her voice, needing to feel her touch.
"Maria," he whispered as the sun kissed the plains. "Wait for
me."
He pursed his lips and picked up his bag. With straight shoulders and a sound
mind, he walked away. He didn't look over his shoulder until he was far enough
away so he couldn't see her looking out her bedroom window at him. He knew she
was there, but the last look would be the one that made him stay.
~~~
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Close your eyes, I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the time when I don't have to say...
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
