“Would you hurry up Maria we are going to be late.” Kyle yelled impatiently. Why on earth did he get stuck with Maria? Oh yeah that’s right he didn’t have a choice. “Maria?” he shouted again.

“Alright, Alright. I’m ready. Let’s get this over with.” Maria said as she came out of the room still putting on her jewelry.

“About time. Let’s go. We’re supposed to meet them downstairs in 5 minutes.” Kyle said looking at his watch shaking his head. Why did it take girls so long to get ready?

“We have plenty of time Kyle.” Maria said casually looking at her watch as well.

Kyle quickly ushered Maria to the elevator as he continued to look at his watch. If they didn’t hurry up, his ass was going to be dead meat.

“Would you stop doing that? You are driving me crazy.” Maria finally yelled. Kyle was making her nuts. They had plenty of time. Besides, she should be the one that was fidgety not him.

Maria started to hum along with the elevator music as Kyle continued to fidget and look at his watch. He even started counting down the floors as they made their decent to the lobby. 14. God could this elevator go any slower. He had to get her downstairs by 5:00. It was his job. He had 3 minutes left and 14 floors to go.

As soon as the elevator reached the 13th floor it jerked suddenly and the lights went out. “Oh fuck,” Kyle yelled.

“What happened?” Maria said as she turned in the direction that Kyle was standing.

“What does it look like Maria, the elevator stopped.” Kyle yelled.

“Well duh. I know that Kyle. What I meant was why did it stop. What happened?” Maria said remaining remarkably calm under the circumstances. This is not good .

Kyle started to pace back and forth trying not to bump into Maria. Fuck he was in trouble now .

“Kyle would you please stop pacing.” Maria said getting very annoyed with her companion.

Kyle was very glad that he couldn’t see his watch now. He didn’t even want to know how late they were. Damn. Damn. Damn. It just isn’t fair. This wasn’t his fault. He got her in the elevator and they would have made it on time. “It’s not my fault.” Kyle whispered.

“What are you mumbling about now?” Maria asked impatiently. Why did she have to get stuck with Kyle? Oh yeah that’s right she didn’t have a choice.

“Maria, he is going to kill me. This isn’t my fault. You would have been downstairs if the elevator hadn’t stopped. It isn’t fair. You know he’s going to blame me,” Kyle started to uncharacteristically whine.

“Just calm down. Ok. The elevator stopped. Obviously that isn’t your fault. However, it would be nice if your latent alien powers decided to show their ugly head at this moment. A little alien boost would really come into handy right now.” Maria said wishing once again that she were stuck in the elevator with someone else besides Kyle.

“Nice. Kick a brother when he is down. You had to bring up the alien mojo didn’t you? You know how much that bugs me. Thanks Maria. You’re a pal.” Kyle said and started to pace once again. It may bug him but he would give almost anything to have those alien powers at this moment. They at least may be able to protect him from what will be coming later once this elevator finally started moving.

“No problem. That’s what I am here for.” Maria said trying not to laugh. He really does deserve this. It may not be his fault that they are stuck in the elevator but the events to come this evening certainly were.

“You’re laughing at me aren’t you?” Kyle asked.

“Would I do anything like that?” Maria said innocently.

“You’re damn right you would sister. You are enjoying this aren’t you? Come on Maria, I said I was sorry. When are you going to forgive me?” Kyle asked his agitation really starting to get to him. He could actually feel the lining of his stomach being eaten away by the ulcer he has acquired in the last 24 hours.

“Oh I don’t know maybe in another 10 or 15 years. You had to tell them didn’t you? You couldn’t keep it to yourself. I was going to tell him tonight but no, blabber mouth had to spill the beans and you see where we are now.” Maria for the first time since the elevator stopped started to get really upset. She wasn’t upset with the elevator situation she was upset about what was coming when they finally got out. It should have been her choice but no now it was totally out of her hands.

“I’m sorry Maria, but you kept saying you were going to tell them but you never did. It isn’t like you could keep it a secret much longer anyhow. Jeez and it isn’t like you are going to have to do anything you don’t want to do anyhow.” Kyle shouted back at her.

“It was my secret to tell not yours.” Maria shouted but then continued in a lower voice “And I would have known if…” Maria stopped as she felt the tears come to her eyes.

“What? You would have known what?” Kyle asked coming closer to Maria. He could tell she was crying.

Maria sighed. “At least I would have known if he wanted to marry me for me and not just because I’m pregnant,” Maria said as she felt as if the weight of the world was on her shoulders.

Kyle reached for Maria and pulled her into his arms. “Maria, the guy loves you. He would give the world for you. In fact he did give up a world for you. Of course he wants to marry you. He is just acting like the super freak that he is right now. You scared the crap out of him yesterday Maria. You were almost hit by that damn car. And then to find out that he not only almost lost you but a baby as well. It would have killed him.” Kyle whispered to her.

“But would he have asked me to marry him if you hadn’t said anything about the baby?” Maria sobbed as she put her head on her brother’s shoulder.

“I saw his eyes Maria. He saw that car coming. He had his hand raised but he knew he couldn’t use his powers especially not during New York City rush hour. I saw the look on his face when he thought you were going to be hit knowing that he couldn’t get to you in time. Yes Maria he would have asked you to marry him no matter what.” Kyle insisted.

Maria pulled away from Kyle wiping the tears from her eyes. “By the way thank you for pulling me away from the curb. Thanks Kyle for saving our lives.” Maria said her hand moving protectively to her stomach.

“No problem. Thanks what I am here for.” Kyle said knowing that giving the same circumstances he would have done anything to keep her from being hurt even throwing himself in front of her. They are family after all.

Maria smiled and then hit Kyle behind the head. “But you are still in the dog house.”

It was Kyle’s turn to sigh. “Yeah I know and if this elevator doesn’t start moving I will be a dead dog as well. Guerin is going to kill me.”

“He won’t kill you, just mame you a bit. He is still a little pissed that you knew before he did.” Maria said.

“Again not my fault.” Kyle said getting agitated once again and started to pace.

Luckily for both Kyle and Maria the lights on the elevator suddenly came on and it quickly started to move. The door no sooner opened before Kyle pulled Maria out of the doors towards their intended location. They took two steps and stopped suddenly.

“Man it wasn’t my fault. The elevator got stuck. I swear she would have been here on time.” Kyle started pleading his case to the angry looking man in front of them.

“Valenti you must be the luckiest man alive because if this whole city wasn’t in the middle of a blackout you would be dead because I can almost guarantee she was late.” Michael said to Kyle not taking his eyes off Maria, his wife to be.

Maria smiled and said innocently “Me late. Never. It was all Kyle’s fault.”

As Michael and Maria walked hand and hand through the lobby a stunned Kyle stood watching them shaking his head muttering to himself. “It wasn’t my fault.”

Isabel took pity on the man and took his arm pulling him along after Max and Liz who had followed the couple. She patted his hand and whispered. “Face it Kyle. It is always your fault.”

The End.
