Ch 1

It was so bizarre, she could hardly believe that it was true. Alex Whitman was dead, and she, Isabel

Evans, his semi—girlfriend , was waiting out  side of a morgue, while her brother climbed into the ambulance

where Alex’s body still was to try and save him. Bizarre was the best word she could come up with for

the situation.

She wasn’t going to cry.  She wasn’t.  Alex wasn’t really gone not for good anyway.  He loved her, like

no one had ever loved her.  He thought that she was special, not because of the grades, not because she

was gorgeous, ok so those things factored into it, but because she was Isabel Evans.  He didn’t care that she

was an alien, he didn’t care that it put his life on the line.  Alex didn’t think about things like that. Alex thought about things in terms of how she could get hurt.  He was an angel on Earth, and she intended that he stay here with her.

‘OK. Alex,’ she thought at him. ‘You can’t do this, alright.  You’re going to be fine, Max is going to bring you back.  We have a date you know.  Nobody breaks a date with Isabel Evans, Nobody.  You got that Alex.  I’m not going to break your heart this time, but if you leave It’ll break mine.  Damn it Alex! I’ve gone and fallen for you and now you’re leaving me.  I won’t accept this.  You will come back to me.’

Isabel knew she was on the verge of tears.  It didn’t help that Maria and Liz were sniffing around her. Tess wasn’t even comforting, it was like she was somewhere else. Kyle was paying most of his attention to Liz and Tess and Michael had his arms rapped tightly around Maria to keep her standing.  ‘We need you Alex.  Please come home.’

Isabel’s thoughts went to the prom.  A week ago they had been dancing together.  He’d taken a chance on her

again and she was ready for him for the first time. She had fallen for Alex that night, no one could tell

her otherwise, no one. Max stepped down from the ambulance.  It seemed like forever since he got in.  Where was Alex?  He wasn’t behind Max.

“I couldn’t save him.  I’m sorry.”  Max said, his voice strained.

No one moved.  It was almost as if they didn’t move they would wake up from this nightmare, that it would

all go away.

“No!” Maria’s anguished moan was the first break to the silence.

Soon all of the girls were in tears.  Isabel stood still, watching the ambulance as Max Michael and Kyle

were herding everyone back to the cars.

“Come on Izzy.”  Max said gently.  “He’s gone.  You need to get some sleep, Iz.  You won’t be able to

function if you don’t.”

“Max’s words were foreign to her, like she could no longer understand the language, but they made

something inside of her snap.  Isabel did something completely uncharacteristic.  She took off at a run

and threw open the ambulance doors and scrambled to climb inside.  She sat down next to Alex and began to

cry and yell at him.

“Damn you Alex Whitman!” She screamed through her tears. “You weren’t the only one taking a chance you

know, I was taking a chance on you.  I’ve never actually been out on a date.  No one has ever cared

about me the way that you do.  You can’t leave me, you can’t.”

Isabel put her arms around Alex’s neck and laid her head down on his chest and sobbed hysterically, holding on for dear life.  Inside she was hoping to hear a heartbeat or that she die herself so that she could go with him.

Max climbed in after his sister and grabbed her by the shoulders.  “He’s gone Izzy, he’s gone.  There’s nothing I can do.  I tried, really I did, for you, for everyone, but he’s gone Izzy.  Say goodbye.”

Isabel moved her hands up on either side of Alex’s head, as if to give him one last message, or to get in

one last time.  Max put his hands over Isabel’s to try and pull her out, but an amazing surge of power went

through them both, throwing Max out of the ambulance.

Isabel didn’t know what to do.  She turned to look at Max, and almost went out to help him, but movement

from inside the ambulance stopped her.  Her head instantly whipped back to the prone body, lying on the

gurney.

“Alex.” Isabel said softly, praying to whoever was up there that she wasn’t crazy.  “Alex, it’s Izzy.  Wake

up, please Alex.”

“Iz.” Alex said as his eyes fluttered open.  “You saved me.”  His voice sounded like dry leaves.

“Yes.  Yes I did.”  Isabel said as tears began to fall down her face again.  She laid her head over his heart

again and this time heard a definite beat, she cried even harder.

“Don’t cry Izzy.” Alex said as he moved his hand to stroke her hair.  “Please baby, don’t cry. I’m right

here.”

“Why, Alex? Why were you in that accident?  What happened?” Isabel asked, needing to know.

“There was no accident Iz.” Alex said tonelessly.

“Yes there was. It’s what killed you.” Isabel noticed that she was starting to get hysterical again and

instantly tried to calm herself down. “It’s alright, you just don’t remember.”

“There was no accident Iz.”  Alex said, tears welling up in his eyes as he got ready to tell her the truth.

“It was Tess Iz.  She did this to me.  She broke me.” Tears began to fall down Alex’s face as he remembered everything that had happened over the past year.  He hadn’t wanted Isabel to know what Tess had done to him, he’d feared it would make him less desireable in her eyes and he never wanted to lose her.

Isabel stared at Alex.  Tess.  Tess couldn’t have done this, she wasn’t capable of this.  But why would Alex

lie?  Why would Alex say these things about her best friend if they weren’t true?  He wouldn’t.  It was that simple.  Alex would do anything to save her pain, he would never intentionally cause it.

Isabel instantly blamed herself.  She’d brought Tess into the circle, she was the one that had convinced everyone that Tess was OK.   Well not everyone.  Liz and Maria had never liked her, they’d been right all along.  “I’m so sorry Alex.  She’ll pay for this, I promise.  She’ll pay for this.”

Max stood up outside the ambulance shocked.  Power like that had never gone through him, not even when

he’d saved Liz and had had his whole being focused on her.  Max figured that Iz had somehow used him to try

and get Alex back.  He just felt bad that there was nothing that he could do.

That was when he heard it.  “She’ll pay for this, I promise.  She’ll pay for this.”

Max jumped back into the ambulance, not caring how exhausted he was.  The sight that greeted him was

shocking.  Isabel was holding on to Alex making promises as he stroked her hair.  Max stood there with his mouth open for a while, staring at his friend and his sister.  He hadn’t believed it possible, but apparently it was.

“Alex.” Max said, his voice filled with breathless wonder.

Isabel sat up straight upon hearing Max’s voice and put on a smile while wiping away her tears.  “You were

wrong.” She said, the teasing element obvious in her voice.

“Well Alex, we’ve got to get you out of here.” Max said smiling.  “I don’t think they approve of corpses

coming back to life.”

“Maxwell, what the hell is taking so long?”  Michael’s voice echoed from outside the ambulance.  “Damn it

Isabel. If Maxwell can’t drag you out I sure as hell will. I’ve already got Maria in the car-” Michael

stopped short upon seeing Alex.  “You brought him back.  Alright Maxwell, we’re dragging Alex out of

here.  Get out Isabel, so we have enough room to pick him up.”

“Which car?” Max asked looking over Alex to Michael.

“The Jetta.  I think this is what Maria really needs right now.  Besides Kyle already took Liz and Tess

home” Michael said.

The boys picked Alex up and carried him to the Jetta, and laid him down in the backseat.  Isabel slid in

with him, putting his head on her lap.  Michael climbed into the driver’s seat and nudged Maria who

had fallen asleep in the passenger’s seat.

“Maria.” Michael’s voice was gentle as he stroked Maria’s hair.  “There’s someone here I think you’d

like to see.”

“I don’t want to see anyone Michael.  I just want to go home.”  Maria’s voice was filled with tears and

exhaustion.

“Not even me Ria?” Alex questioned from the backseat.

“Alex?”  Maria asked, shocked.  She peeked around her seat and saw her dear friend behind her.  “Alex!” She

screamed throwing her arms around him, practically climbing in the backseat.

“OK Maria.”  Michael said  “Get back in your seat so I can drive.”

Maria did as Michael asked but kept on talking the entire way home.  Michael decided that Alex would stay

at his place for the night, or until they could come up with some plausible excuse for this resurrection.

Isabel and Maria insisted on staying as well.  Each called home and told their mothers that they were

staying at the Parker’s to spend time remembering Alex.  Lying wasn’t on their top list of priorities but they didn’t know what else to do.

Michael put Alex down in his bed and said that he would be sleeping on the couch that night.  Maria stayed a little longer, but eventually she to left to go be with Michael.  Isabel sat there for over an hour just holding his hand.  Once she was too tired to even sit there she got up to go find a place to sleep. Alex held her hand tight.

“I can’t sleep Izzy.  I need you here with me.  Come lie down next to me.  I just need to feel you in my arms Iz, to hold you close.”

He didn’t have to ask her twice.  Isabel crawled into the bed next to him and a smile lit up her face as his arms slipped around her body.  He was alive and at that moment that was all that mattered, they’d deal with the rest later. They fell asleep together, breathing to the same beat.
