And time goes by, so slowly and time can do so much
Are you, still mine?
I need your love, I need your love
God speed your love to me

The words were bittersweet as they poured from the speakers. Nothing can possess
the soul like a memory of a song. The night winds were beginning to kick up
outside, but the heat radiating inside was enough to keep away the chill. For
now.
He lowered her head to hers and she inhaled the sweetest smell of his body. She
kissed him and wondered if the kiss was enough. Was it enough for her to hold on
to him? For now? For always?
She felt the comfort of his arms around her as she had so many
times before; for so many years. She felt his warmth through the coolness of her
heart. Through the pain of a shattered heart.
"I'm sorry," he whispered in her ear. "I love you Maria, always.
Forever."
"I know." She whispered and tightened her grip around his neck. The
music was coursing through her and it felt good. The beat of a different mood;
of a different time in a different place. Remembered.
Maria sighed and knew it wasn't enough. The breeze outside had turned into a
shrill wind. Sand knocking on the windows wanting in where it was warm. Wanting
in to be with the lovers.
"It's been a rough year," he said and pulled away to look at her face.
Her beautiful flawless face. "We'll get through it, though. Right?"
She nodded. They always muddled through everything. That's the way it had always
been. Probably the way it would always be. Something's never change. Something's
aren't meant to change.
"Stay with me?" She asked in a dripping voice.
"Always." He smiled.

Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the waiting arms of the sea
Lonely rivers cry, wait for me, wait for me
To the open arms, wait for me
~~~
The sway of the room, the curse of the maudlin wind, the rattling on the
windows. She held him close and held back the tears she'd cried so many times
before. The tears that would haunt her until she took her own last breath.
"Are you mad?" He asked softly in her ear.
She nodded. "I am Michael. It's not fair, it's not right!"
He lowered his head and touched his lips to her forehead. "Never forget me,
Maria."
"Mama?"
The voice came from behind Maria, startling her. Her daughter. Her grown
daughter. Maria looked down at her cotton nightgown swaying in the draft;
suddenly embarrassed for talking to ghosts.
"Mama, are you okay?" Her daughter approached her and took her hand.
Maria nodded slowly and squeezed her daughter's hand.
"Next week would have been your thirtieth anniversary…"
Maria nodded and smiled. A few months shy of that milestone she lost her partner
and love of her life. She lost part of herself.
"Dad loved you."
"I know sweetheart, more than anything."
~~~
My love, my darling, I've hungered for your kiss
Are you still mine?
I need your love, I need your love
God, speed your love, to me
~~~
end.
