It’s lunchtime at Roswell High a couple days before Halloween. Isabel and Tess watch some fellow students put up posters for the Halloween dance.

"You and Michael gonna go?" asks Isabel.

"I doubt it," says Tess. "I’m not into pretending to be someone else. And Michael would only go if everyone else was."

"I’d have thought Kyle would take Liz."

"They’re not together Isabel."

"They’re something. Not that I care. I’m over Kyle Valenti."

"Of course you are."

"I am. You and Michael should go to the dance. Someone should have a good time."

"We will, just not at the dance. I have plans for that boy. And the costume thing isn’t me."

"Halloween isn’t about pretending to be someone else."

"It’s not?"

"It’s a pagan holiday to honor the dead. You dress up so the dead are comfortable walking among the living. That way, you can’t tell which is which."

"Or which is a witch. Halloween’s not my idea of a good time."

"Come on, let’s check on Maria. Make sure no one’s giving her a hard time."

***************************************

Maria closes her eyes in tiredness as she puts her books in her locker. She opens them and smiles when she sees Tess and Isabel walk up to her. "Hey guys."

"Hey," says Isabel. "How you holding up?"

"I’m a little tired."

"Want an alien energy boost?" asks Tess.

"No thanks. I’d be hyper the rest of the day."

"Everyone still treating you all right?"

"Yeah, especially after Alex and Max put the fear of God into everyone my first day back."

"Good."

"I still remember the look on their faces," says Isabel. "Who knew Alex could be that menacing?"

"It was funny," says Tess. "You need anything Maria?"

"Liz talking to me again," says Maria.

The three silently watch as Liz walks past them down the hall. She acts like she doesn’t see them.

"She’ll get over it eventually," says Isabel.

"That’s what you said two months ago," says Maria.

Tess smirks. "I told you, time’s relative to us."

"Bitch. I don’t have two lifetimes to wait."

"You never know," says Isabel.

"I hate you both. And I miss my baby."

"Why don’t we call her?"

***************************************

At the Deluca house, Amy and Jim are making out on the sofa while the baby sleeps in the nearby playpen.

Amy pushes at Jim’s chest when the phone rings. "I need to get that."

"They’ll call back."

"It’s probably Maria. She’ll be scared to death if I don’t answer."

"Fine, but we’re finishing our conversation."

"I don’t remember us talking."

"Just answer the phone."

Amy gets up and answers. She assures Maria the baby is fine. After holding the phone so Maria can hear Leda breathing, Amy hangs up and turns to Jim. "What are we doing?"

"It hasn’t been that long," says Jim.

"I’m serious. Where do you see this going? Because I’m not sure it’s going anywhere."

"Why would you say that?"

"I love you, I’m in love with you. Boy, I never thought I’d say those words to anyone again."

Jim smiles. "Is that such a bad thing?"

"For almost two years while I was falling in love, you kept a huge secret from me. How do I trust you won’t do it again?"

"I could give you my word."

"That’s not good enough anymore."

"I don’t know how to explain it any better. Until right before Kyle got shot, I had no proof. I would’ve sounded like a crazy person. And after that-"

"They saved Kyle’s life."

"Yeah. I know trusting me is a lot to ask, but I’m asking anyway. I don’t want to lose you."

"You won’t. We’ll work through this eventually."

"I hope so."

At their lunch table in the quad, Tess laughs and shakes her head at Maria and Isabel. "I’ll be back in a minute."

Tess goes to her locker. She takes out the book she’s lending Isabel. When she turns, Michael’s in front of her.

"Let’s go," says Michael.

"Where?"

"Home."

"What for?"

Michael backs Tess against the lockers. He leans down and gives her a long, drugging kiss. "Let’s go."

Tess reluctantly shakes her head. "We are not leaving school to have sex."

"You don’t want to?"

"Yes. But we can’t. We’ll go straight home after."

"I have to work."

"Then I’ll wait up for you. I had something planned anyway."

"I don’t think I can wait that long. The eraser room it is."

Tess laughs as Michael drags her to the eraser room. "What if we get caught?"

"You’ll mindwarp ‘em."

Michael pulls her into the room and seals the door with his powers. "Only twenty minutes before the first bell. Strip."

Michael begins pulling off his clothes.

Tess waves her hand and sultry music with a beat begins playing. "Slower. Let me enjoy it."

"We’re at school."

"If we’re having sex here, I’m gonna enjoy it. Now give me my money’s worth."

Michael stares at her incredulously. Finally, he smiles. "Only for you."

In the hallway, Alex and Max watch Michael and Tess go into the eraser room.

"You don’t think they’re gonna…" says Alex before trailing off.

"I try not to think about it at all," says Max. "Especially now that I know they’re having sex."

"I thought they weren’t?"

"Went by their apartment a couple weeks ago. Heard ‘em through the door."

"They were that loud?"

"Yeah. What’d you want to talk about?"

"My parents asked me about marrying Maria again last night."

"How’d they react when you refused?"

"I said I’d think about it."

"What?"

"The idea’s grown on me lately. I think Maria and I could make a go of it with our daughter."

"She’s my daughter too."

"I know, that’s why I wanted to talk to you first, tell you I’m gonna talk to Maria."

"When?"

"After school. I was hoping you’d give us a few hours before coming to see Leda."

"Call me at home when you guys are done."

"Thanks Max."

***************************************

After school, Tess is walking Kyle to his car.

"What are you doing this afternoon?" asks Tess.

"Have some homework to finish, why?"

"You wanna hang out?"

"Loverboy have other plans?"

"Michael has to work. Isabel’s spending time with her mother and Maria’s with the baby."

"Good to know I’m your fourth choice."

"Kyle, you know I love you. You’re my best friend who’s a boy that’s not my boyfriend."

"Somethin’ tells me I still come in fourth."

"But first in your category. Please?"

Kyle laughs. "Wish I could but I got a paper due in two days and haven’t started yet. Maybe this weekend?"

"I’ll hold you to that. We’ll ditch Michael and the others, do something fun."

"Loverboy’s not gonna like that. He likes you where he can touch you."

"It’s mutual but I miss my best friend."

"Aww."

They hug.

"Go do your paper," says Tess.

"Want a ride home?"

"Sure."

***************************************

Alex is walking Maria to her house.

"It’s a little pumpkin costume," says Maria. "Leda looks adorable in it. I know she’s too young to take trick or treating but I thought we could dress her up and get together. Take some pictures."

"Sounds great."

"You all right Alex?"

"Yeah, just a lot on my mind."

"What happened to Max? I usually have to fight you both to carry my own books."

"I told him I needed to talk to you alone."

"About?"

"Us getting married."

"Alex-"

"Just hear me out. We both love Leda, and we love each other."

"Not like that we don’t."

"You know I’m committed to being there for both of you."

"That doesn’t mean you have to marry me."

Alex stops and grabs her hand. "I want to."

"Why?"

"Honestly? I can’t imagine my life without you. We have a daughter, we should at least try."

"She’s Max’s daughter too."

"And he can’t guarantee he won’t leave Earth. I can. Promise me you’ll at least think about it."

"I promise."

***************************************

Kyle gets home from dropping Tess off. He enters his bedroom and finds Liz wearing a miniskirt with a slit up the side and a clingy top. "What’s going on?"

"I wanted to see you," says Liz.

"About what?"

Liz pulls Kyle’s head down and kisses him. "This."

Kyle’s hormones take over and he gives in to the kiss. They slowly make their way to the bed and lay down, Kyle on top of Liz. They continue kissing, their hands all over each other.

As Kyle’s hand slides under Liz’s skirt, he gets a flash of Isabel’s face. In a second, he’s off the bed and backing away from Liz.

"What’s wrong?" asks Liz.

"I can’t do this."

"Why not?"

"Neither of us want it, not with each other."

"Yes I do."

"You wouldn’t be here if Leda didn’t exist. You’d find some way to forgive Max."

"But she does exist and I can’t."

"I care about you too much to use you."

"Use me to do what?"

"Nothing."

"Tell me."

"Get over Isabel."

"What?"

"The whole alien thing freaks me out, that’s why I’m not with her. I can’t, I won’t, sleep with you to make it easier to stay away from her. You deserve better Liz."

"What if I don’t want better? What if I want you to use me because I’m using you to get over Max?"

"Then we should stop because forgetting isn’t gonna happen, and I don’t wanna ruin our friendship."

"I have a hole in my chest where Max and Maria used to be Kyle. I want it to stop hurting."

Kyle hugs her as she starts crying. "It’ll stop eventually, I promise."

***************************************

At the Deluca house, Maria puts Leda in her crib and goes to answer the front door. She let’s Max in. "Thanks for coming."

"You said it was important," says Max.

"Did you know Alex was gonna propose to me?"

"He mentioned it."

"And you didn’t try to talk him out of it?"

"You don’t have to accept."

"But now I have to think about it. And if I say no, things will be weird between us."

"If? You’re thinking of saying yes?"

"I have to consider it. Maybe it would be best for Leda."

"How’s it best for her to grow up thinking Alex is her only father and I’m just Uncle Max?"

"I don’t have all the answers. I’m figuring it out as I go."

"So am I."

"Part of your figuring has to do with leaving Roswell for another planet. If Alex leaves, it’ll be to MIT. At least Leda and I could go with him."

"If I can help it, I’d never abandon you two."

"But you might not be able to help it. Alex can."

"That’s not a good enough reason to marry him. Just…really think about it before deciding. It’s the rest of Leda’s life."

"I will. Wanna spend some time with our daughter?"

"Always."

***************************************

Several hours later, Isabel walks out of the library. She turns down the street toward her house.

Kyle’s driving by after taking Liz home. He pulls alongside Isabel. "Need a ride?"

"I’ll walk."

"It’s just a ride."

"No."

"Fine. I’ll follow you home in my car."

"Go away Kyle."

"No."

Isabel turns to the car and raises her hand at him. "I could make you."

"And I could tell Max and Michael you’re walking alone late at night. Your call."

"Jerk," says Isabel, yanking open the door and getting in.

"What are you doing out so late?"

"Minding my own business. You should try it."

"I’m sorry," says Kyle after silently turning a corner.

"Don’t worry about it, okay? Just, take me home."

"I meant, I’m sorry for the way I’ve been acting. I care about you."

"Yeah, you just can’t do the alien thing."

"That’s not the problem, not exactly."

"What is?"

"I can’t do the falling in love with you thing, then have you leave me for your home planet."

"Oh."

"I talked to my dad about it and he made a good point."

"What’s that?"

"I don’t know how long it is before you leave," says Kyle, pulling to a stop in front of the Evans home. "I want to be with you for whatever time we have, not never be with you."

Isabel smiles before leaning over and kissing him. As the kiss turns passionate, Kyle gets flashes of Isabel’s life, as well as Vilandra’s. Isabel also gets flashes. When she sees him and Liz on his bed, and a calendar in the background shows her the current date, she angrily pushes him away.

"What’s wrong?" asks Kyle, trying to pull her back to him.

"How long have you been sleeping with Liz?"

"I’m not!"

"Then what, you deliberately sent me flashes of you two on your bed? You did it to hurt me?"

"It’s not what it looked like."

"It looked like your hand up her skirt," says Isabel as she gets out of the car and slams the door.

Kyle gets out too. "Nothing happened."

"I saw what happened."

"I pushed her away because she wasn’t you."

"Now I feel really special."

"Dammit Isabel, I love you."

Isabel slaps him. "Stay away from me."

She runs into the house. Kyle angrily kicks his tire. He hops back in his car and burns rubber down the street.

Inside, Max looks up when Isabel rushes into his room crying. "What happened?"

She just hugs him and cries.

***************************************

Michael gets home from work. He’s surprised to see a candlelight dinner set up in the living room. "Tess?"

Tess exits the bedroom wearing a silk and lace nightgown. The lavender color illuminates her hair and skin. "You’re late."

"What is all this?"

"Our first anniversary."

"Uh, we got together last New Year’s."

"I know. But this time last year, you followed me out of the Crashdown to make sure I was all right. You made me smile, became my friend, and took me to the Halloween dance."

"I’m not going this year."

"Did I ask you to?"

"Making sure we’re clear."

"Yes Michael, we’re clear. Anyway, I think of it as our anniversary because it’s when I opened my heart to you. I love you Michael, I always will."

"I love you too."

They kiss. Michael bends slightly and lifts Tess in his arms. "We’ll eat later."

"I made sandwiches," says Tess. "They’ll keep."

Michael smiles and kisses Tess again as he carries her into their bedroom.

***************************************

Outside of town, a long air-conditioned bus stops at the welcome to Roswell sign. The door opens. Rath and Lonnie exit. Nicholas stands on the bottom step.

"I expect regular reports," says Nicholas. "This is your last chance to go home."

The bus door closes. The bus makes a U-turn and drives away from Roswell.

"I really hate that guy," says Rath.

"You can get rid of him once we have our ticket home," says Lonnie. "I don’t like this plan, especially you getting cozy with that human chick."

"Neither do I but we gotta play it his way for now. Come on, let’s get a place to stay so we can watch ‘em."

They clasp hands and walk into Roswell.
