Muse #2 - Frivolous - Sorcerer - Enchantment - Punishment Isabel surveyed the movie rack and scratched her upper lip. She didn't know what she was in the mood for. She picked up "A Beautiful Mind", read the back and frowned. Maybe she wasn't in the mood for mental illness today. "Pst, Isabel." She looked up over the rack at Kyle, who was eagerly waving a copy of "Aladdin." Isabel groaned audibly. "Kyle, it's a cartoon." "Yeah, but it's a GOOD cartoon," he said, flipping the DVD over so he could see the back. He pointed to Jafar. "He's the bad guy." Isabel looked toward the ceiling, tried to keep her patience. "Yes, I know, Kyle. I've seen it many times. Thanks to you." He missed her annoyance. "I love the beginning where Robin Williams - well, that little peddler guy, really - is riding across the sand on that tired camel and he sings that song about Arabian nights." Kyle gave a little laugh, then did an almost perfect impression of the peddler. "Welcome to Agra bah. City of mystery, of enchantment, and the finest merchandise this side of the river Jordan, on sale today, come on down!" Isabel had to laugh. "Kyle, I don't want to get a cartoon, okay? How about something more adult?" She caught his eyes start to move toward the blue room. "Not THAT adult." He laughed, then remembered he was supposed to be pouting. "Oh, come on. This is the perfect move, Iz. It has sultans and flying carpets - it even has a sorcerer!" "Kyle, no." She sighed and started to look for something better. Maybe a nice romantic comedy - "Kate and Leopold" was supposed to be good. Kyle was suddenly before her, "Aladdin" still clutched in his hand. "Why can't we get this?" What was his problem? She frowned and shook her head. "That's for kids, Kyle." He followed her gaze and picked up "A Beautiful Mind", the same one she'd just had in her hand. "So, I'm a big kid," he argued. "Because I'm still a kid and still like a good fairy tale, does my punishment have to be watching heavy, over-dramatized crap?" Isabel gave a surprised gasp. "Kyle, that movie won Best Picture last year! It's hardly crap." He shrugged. "I'll give you that. But it is heavy, right?" She nodded silently. He was right about that. "Isabel, movies are supposed to be frivolous fun - an escape of sorts. I don't want to watch a movie about wack jobs or some sappy romantic comedy that in real life would absolutely never happen." He held up "Aladdin" again. "As I said before, this is the perfect movie. Mystery, adventure, a princess." She met his gaze, interested suddenly. He knew he had her - hook, line and sinker. A smile curved his lips. "See, she's a princess, you're a princess. You and Jasmine have something in common." She sighed, not wanting to let on that she was thinking she might like to see that movie again. After all, they'd played this scene every time they went to the video store - Kyle ran straight for the Disney aisle and Isabel played the part of uninterested girlfriend. But it always ended the same - she always gave in. "And there's a big blue Genie, too," Kyle added. "And if you're looking for romance, can I remind you of that nice little carpet ride Aladdin and Jasmine take? Do I need to sing some of that song for you?" Isabel's eyes grew wide. She knew he'd do it. "No, that's okay," she said quickly, glancing at the other customers in the store. Instead, he spoke the words, "I can show you the world - Shining, shimmering, splendid. Tell me, princess, now when did you last let your heart decide?" She rolled her eyes and grabbed the movie from him. "Okay, fine. You win." As they walked to the counter, a devilish smile crept across Kyle's face. All he had to do was remind her she was a princess and he could win every time. The end |
